Third St., free.  Americans will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 17.  Since 1994, people across the country have honored the slain civil rights leader by performing a service to their community.  There are several opportunities to make this MLK holiday more than just another day off.  The University of Louisville is offering people a chance to volunteer and/or donate to the Dare to Care food drive. MARY INGALLS CELEBRATION
American Printing House for the Blind, 1839 Frankfort Ave., 10 a.m.-Noon, free. In honor of National Braille Literacy Month, the American Printing House for the Blind is celebrating the birthday of Mary Ingalls. Ingalls, the older sister of children’s author Laura Ingalls Wilder, was left blind after having scarlet fever when she was 14. As a young teen, Laura was her sister’s “eyes,” describing everything she saw around her. But what happened to Mary when she and Laura grew up? Come to the Museum to explore the sounds and smells, the textures and tastes, of Mary’s world. Learn all about her life and take a look at some of the books from her library. Sing along with some of Pa’s fiddle tunes, weave a beaded bracelet (the same as those Mary made for her sisters), and have some birthday cake made from Ma’s recipe. Fair pay activist Lilly Ledbetter, the namesake of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, will be the keynote speaker at the Louisville Metro Human Rights Commission’s 15th Annual Race and Relations Conference. Ledbetter will discuss the fair pay legislation that was signed into law in 2009 by President Barack Obama. The Eleanor Young Love Award will also be presented for outstanding service in promoting positive human relations within the Louisville Metro area.
