Members of Bloom Elementary Girl Scout Troop 1188 recently took a break from their normal troop meeting in lieu of a simple, creative pleasure: making their own Derby hats. Troop Leader Barbara Jones says that Dianna Higgins, who works in Jones’ Remax Metro office, approached her with the idea. “Dianna makes her own Derby hat each year and asked if our girls would like to learn,” says Jones. Higgins’s father is in a retirement home, and Jones, who shares duties with Troop Leader Shannon Thomas, will arrange for the girls to go there to show off their hats and hand out Girl Scout cookies. The hat project took place in and around the Remax Metro office at Douglass Loop.
