Heidi Howe Gets a New Groove
Featured Event Profile by Cindy Lamb
Long-time Louisville recording and performing singer-songwriter Heidi Howe can add the titles “mom” and “teacher” to her list this year. With a resume of concerts, clubs and CDs being topped only by the joys and trials of parenthood, the cumulative experiences have led her to blend and create the Louisville Preschool for the Arts – LPA, for short.
When Howe adopted her son Drew from Korea in 2006, she was already involved in sharing music with area children for fun and education, as well as sustainable living activism. Having worked in preschools for over a decade, she has inspired a group of educators to serve as the core of this unique school.
Her popular music class, BandWagon, has been rolling for a year, with melodic adventures into traditional and contemporary songs. Drew turned 5 in January, and his mama, who is working to complete her Child Development Associate credential, is eager to apply hers skills and passion to his particular age group and younger.
With the release of “Louisville Lullabies: Cradle Rockin’ Sleeper Hits,” a compilation of songs for babes of all ages on Gill Holland’s sonaBLAST! label (all proceeds from the purchase benefit Home of the Innocents), co-producer Howe and her guitar have made even more inroads through the entertainment and education circle.
The LPA will be a natural progression of this vocation. It combines an educational curriculum with a unique program that encourages students to explore, experience and appreciate various forms of music, dance, drama and visual arts.
Located at 1559 Bardstown Road (and sharing a building with Mama’s Hip) Louisville Preschool for the Arts features small class sizes, an experienced, talented staff, all natural snacks and earth-friendly cleaning products. The preschool program, offered for children ages 3 to 5 years, meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon, September through May. Enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year is underway. The LPA also offers parent/child classes and summer camps.
LPA instructors are experienced artists and educators who enjoy nurturing children’s multiple abilities. Founder Heidi Howe is the director and music instructor, Tara Young is the visual arts instructor, Laura Morton is the drama instructor, and Amasetta Kah is the dance and movement instructor.
