Family Fun Night: Dinner Out on Bardstown Road
Friday, January 8
As a gift to families in the Highlands neighborhood, Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church is offering a “Family Fun Night along Restaurant Row,” a post-Christmas gathering for families in the community to reduce stress and encourage family fun.
Friday, January 8, the first Family Fun Night will begin at 6 p.m. at 1722 Bardstown Road (at the church that hosts the Saturday Farmers’ Market). Impellizzeri Pizza will cater the first meal, which will be followed by homemade desserts. The church says it is their gift to families with busy lives to provide a nutritious meal that none of the participants has to plan, prepare or clean up. Following the catered dinner, there will be organized, collaborative, trust-building games and activities for people of all ages to have fun and enjoy the positive benefits of play.
The meal and the activities are free to families in the community. Reservations are required in advance and may be made at the church’s Web site, www.brpres.org (go to Family Fun Night registration), or by calling the church office at (502) 451-8305) to arrange for tickets.
The second Family Fun Night is tentatively scheduled for Friday, January 22. Participating restaurants are Bristol Bar and Grille, Impellizzeri Pizza, Mark’s Feed Store and Ramsi’s Cafe on the World.
Celebrate 25 Years with The Back Door
January 10 – 16
The Back Door, located in the heart of the Highlands at Mid City Mall, will celebrate 25 years of business throughout the week of January 10 through 16, each night offering drink specials and door prizes with help from sponsor Jameson Irish Whiskey.
Recognized many times over the years for their great drink specials and “beer food,” The Back Door is also noted for their loyal employees, many who have been with the bar for over 20 years. One particular employee, Carrie Martin, was chosen as Absolute Vodka’s 2009 Bartender of the Year.
Owner John Dant invites everyone to the celebration, saying, “Come experience the magic that has kept patrons coming around for 25 years.”
Library Hosts “Galileo’s Starry Messenger”
January 21 – February 10
No scientist – perhaps no person – in the past thousand years has changed the world more than Galileo Galilei. What did he do that was so important? A new exhibit at the Louisville Free Public Library ventures to find out. “Galileo’s Starry Messenger: 1610 – 2010” explores the work of Galileo, touching on the science that came before him, then focusing on what he discovered and what those discoveries have meant to the future of science.
In addition to informative display panels, the exhibit also includes a full-color reproduction of the Sidereus Nuncius, a short treatise published in New Latin by Galileo in 1610. The reproduction is based on a copy residing at the University of Oklahoma that is actually signed by Galileo. It may not be the real thing, but if it were, you couldn’t flip through the pages.
The exhibit will be on display at four branch libraries for two weeks each. In conjunction with the exhibit, astronomer and project coordinator Dr. Christopher Graney will host a discussion of Galileo and his work at each location.
The Highlands/Shelby Park Library branch will host the exhibit beginning January 21 and ending with a special program on Wednesday, February 10, at 7 p.m. Other participating library branch locations are the Southwest Library, Crescent Hill Library and Middletown Library.
The exhibit was created by Otter Creek-South Harrison Observatory and funded by the observatory and the Jefferson Community & Technical College Technology and Related Sciences (TARS) Division. For more information, call (502) 574-1611 or go to www.lfpl.org.
The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours.
