Closing Guantanamo Bay

Close Gitmo?  I don’t get it.  Why these “detainees” can’t be brought before Military Tribunals in warm weather further mystifies.  Since they certainly have rights under the Geneva Conference, the thinking eludes me further.  

 

Congress balked and heretofore has failed to fund the closing of a MILITARY BASE on the pesky island (dictatorship) of Cuba. It seems commonsensical to keep it open and viable. 

 

So now another prison is being built and readied for them in Illinois, The Homeland. Jobs, jobs, jobs?  How would we feel if it were in Valley Station instead?  I’d be a bit uncomfortable. How about you?

 

Attorney General Eric Holder finally copped to having the show trial of THE MASTERMIND OF 911, Khalid Shakh Mohammed, metaphorically in the shadow of the twin towers.  Why? He has already pleaded guilty at Gitmo, but now he and cohorts have changed their pleas and will enjoy the entire panoply of rights under federal law.  The irony is staggering.

 

Even lefty New York Mayor Bloomberg has changed his mind, noting traffic tie-ups, extra security, etc., will cost the city $1 billion.

 

Khalid Shakh Mohammed is not an American citizen and is not entitled to enjoy our rights. In addition to the dollars, what about revenge?  What happens if an American decides to cut the trial short with a bullet or a bomb?   

 

In a democracy, 51 percent rules.  We learned this in Middle School, even before – 51 percent, or a plurality.  This is how things work in our revered system of government.  But both Democrats and Republicans can filibuster the United States Senate with 41 percent. Both parties are afraid to bust up this “Super Majority” rule, because they know the balance of power can change with a single round of election.  Though no robot supporter of Obama’s health care plan, I cannot help but shake my head in disbelief that this seemingly simple majority can be blocked with threat of a filibuster – insured by 41 percent.  It is counter-intuitive.

 

I truly believed Obama’s election would herald a new era of bi-partisanship. Whoops!

 

The Health Care plan was hammered out in rooms filled only with Democrats. Now our President promises to meet with Republicans once a month ...

 

Once a month!

 

Both sides point fingers.  

 

Why can’t both sides drop their “Republican” and “Democrat” labels and just be Americans. Now there’s a thought.

 

Derby City? Sure.  River City? Of course.  “Possibility City”?  Duh.  Does this mean Louisville someday could be a real city? Silly slogan.  World-Class City rings better to me.
