In 2010, an estimated 207,090 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. As a result of this staggering statistic, nearly everyone in the community is familiar with the impact of the disease. Each year, community members from all walks of life join together to take a stance in the fight against breast cancer by participating in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Louisville.

Dental Works, a local dental office with locations in the Highlands and Fern Creek, is dedicated to making a difference in the community, and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is an event they support.

“We decided to get involved to increase awareness and let our voices be heard,” says Heather Cochran, manager of the Highlands Dental Works office at 1815 Bardstown Road. “In today’s world, the statistics are scary and by raising more money we can help find the cure!”

In 2009, Cochran and her coworkers put together a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer team to support loved ones and clients who had been touched by the disease. “Personally, breast cancer has affected us all in some way or another,” says Cochran, explaining that family members, coworkers and loyal patients have struggled with breast cancer.

The dental office is currently in the midst of pulling their team together again for this year’s event. Cochran says that she loves the camaraderie the event brings – not only within her own team but in every team and individual who takes part. “I enjoy seeing how many people come out trying to make a difference. Everyone is so friendly and positive! It is such a fun and inspiring event. We are really looking forward to being a part of it again this year!”

The American Cancer Society’s 13th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer noncompetitive, family-friendly, 5K walk will take place Sunday, October 24, 2010, at Waterfront Park in Downtown Louisville. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 1 p.m.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer supports the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives and create more birthdays by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.
